As far as I can tell there are no functional differences in the first loop between the Japanese version and the World version, I might very well be wrong on that account, however.This is a magnificent game from the same people that also developed the influential Raiden (Fighters) series. The similarities should be apparent from the glorious audiovisual presentation (including booming explosions as well as glorious debris, shrapnel and wreckages) and the frantic, uninterrupted gameplay. Here are a few notes to take into consideration:- The scoring system is strict. At the end of each stage, the amount of destroyed enemies, collected medals and remaining bombs will be multiplied by the destruction ratio.

You get a colossal x100 bonus for a 100% destruction ratio, the next best thing only nets a x50. Taking out every single enemy is thusly very important. I only manage to do this for the first three stages and stage 5 (and the first two stages of the subsequent loop) for various reasons, hence the mediocre score. Stage 4 is bugged, it is not possible to get the 100% bonus even if you take out all the enemies.
That's why I skip a couple of particularly nasty foes.- Unlike most Raiden games where it is generally advised to stick somewhere near the bottom of the screen for safety reasons, this game demands utmost aggression. Sitting down will quickly get you overwhelmed, taking out dangerous enemies as fast as possible is the order of the day. I probably don't have to explicitly mention how dangerous this can be, it will incinerate several credits since you certainly will fail to react to a single bullet that is fired from a nearby enemy at first.
This is a tough game, almost as hard as Raiden II in my opinion, victory won't come easy.- I make some horrible mistakes. I accidentally switched to the laser in 1-6 and to the missiles in 1-8, especially the former action was a grave error. It cost me some bombs and even more nerves to somehow get back into shape. Generally speaking I was extremely flustered after 1-6, you're not supposed to fly around like a headless chicken all the time. You should learn the order in which enemies appear and trust in your plan, don't back off like I did, it only makes matters worse as I explained above.- While bombs detonate much faster in Viper Phase 1 than they do in Raiden games (unless we're talking about cluster bombs, of course) there is still a minor delay.

If you're trying to point-blank bosses (which is highly encouraged) you still have to drop them in advance, just pressing the button on reaction will most likely get you killed.- You can milk the third and fourth boss for several points if you're fearless. Refrain from damaging the main part too much and focus on the constantly re-appearing goons. I tried my best to take out the bosses as fast as possible, though.
